Why do storage tanks need protective coatings and linings?

Much of the time, storage tanks are made of steel, a metal that corrodes when exposed to water. While manufacturers consistently announce new innovations in construction materials, there’s not yet a pressure vessel on the market that doesn’t deteriorate. Protective coatings and linings slow corrosion, erosion, pitting, and other forms of deterioration that dramatically reduce the lifespan of typical storage tanks.

How do protective coatings and linings work?

Experts apply an impermeable barrier to the inside and outside of storage tanks to prevent moisture and other deteriorating factors from affecting steel. The protective coating or lining might be made of zinc rich primers, synthetic polymers, epoxies, or other substances depending on the tank’s use.
